This crates just looks absolutely amazing! The level of detail and completeness of the object is in my eyes perfect. The only thing that bothers a little bit are the pointy corners of the holder. Textures make the object, and these texture maps make up the most realistic create I have seen. And I have seen a lot of creates, since they are very basic of course. That is also why you can't score perfect in originality on this .
But the overall impact of the beer keg is perfect. I'm sure when this is placed in context it will look as realistic as can be. Which I can see is aimed for, and very well achieved.
The metal bars that hold the keg together could be a little bit more shiny. Of course they have to look a bit old and used. But this way it looks a little bit dull.
But in my opinion this object could not be modeled better ( especially when placed in context, which it is perfect for, since I looked at the level renders)
The distribution of geometry is horribly uneven. The actual barrel itself seems to be way too high poly, while the stand seems to be early PS2 quality. You need to distribute geometry a bit more evenly. Even if you justify that the character will see the barrel more close up, it still doesn't justify the uneven distribution of polygons.
Furthermore, 2.5k polygons for a single keg on a keg stand , even with modern graphics is still somewhat high. Imagine putting it inside a tavern, filled with dozens of other objects.
Something of that kind of nature shouldn't be more than 1.2-1.7 at MOST, and that's if there is something intricate and detailed you want to do with that geometry.
The texture simply looks too flat. Add more zazz to it. Give the base barrel texture a slight brown overlay to bring out some of the rich color. make the moss stand out a bit more by giving a slight drop shadow, and making sure that the bmp reads that. Add a bit of grime and leakage on some of the edges of the wooden boards that make up the barrell itself, and really REALLY redo the metal strips around the barell.
